First, you need to buy a guidebook. There are plenty of beginner guitar booklets that you can pick up from your local music store or even online. Do some research to figure out which book is right for you, and make sure you pay attention to what other guitar players say about each one. You can even ask the experts at any music store which book they recommend for beginners.

Second, find a decent guitar to learn on. When most people want to learn the guitar, they immediately want to start playing electric. However, this may not be the best option for you if you’re just starting out. In order to play electric guitar, you also have to spend money on an amplifier and a power cord in order to get a loud enough sound. Look at used acoustic guitars that you can learn on for cheap.
Third, practice as much as possible. Guitar is something that you pick up as you play, and some famous guitar players have admitted to not even knowing how to read or write music. Skill comes from practice; the more you practice, the more you know about instrument in terms of sound.
